The Blinn Buccaneers and Tyler Apaches will each look to claim their first Southwest Junior College Football Conference victory of the young season Saturday when the two teams square off at Cub Stadium in Brenham.
The Buccaneers (1-2, 0-1) enter the game with the league's top passer in freshman quarterback Garry Kimble, who leads the conference with 728 yards on 43-of-70 passing. The freshman from Pearland, Texas has thrown eight touchdowns without an interception this season and is coming off a dynamic performance in last week's 42-31 loss to Northeastern Oklahoma A&M. In that contest, Kimble completed 23 of 31 passes for 359 yards and three touchdowns and ran for another 101 yards and a score.
Kimble's favorite targets were redshirt freshman Vasquez Haynes (nine receptions, 142 yards, two touchdowns) and freshman wide receiver D.D. Westbrook, who caught four passes for 101 yards, including a 75-yard touchdown.
Tyler (2-1, 0-0), fresh off a 68-7 victory over Southeast Prep last week, boasts plenty of offensive firepower of its own. Running back Leroy Dobbins ranks fifth in the conference with 257 rushing yards and five touchdowns on 40 carries, and quarterback Tyrik Rollison ranks third in the league with 684 yards and seven touchdowns on 53-of-82 passing.
Cord Fletcher leads the Apache defense with 22 tackles this season, while sophomore defensive back Tevin Broussard paces the Buccaneers with 18.
Both teams were ranked in the NJCAA top 20 prior to this week.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
