DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Blinn College cheer and dance teams are seeing double as both squads won a national title for the second consecutive year at the NCA & NDA Collegiate Cheer and Dance Championships April 10 in Daytona Beach, Fla.
Both cheer and dance finished in first place in the preliminary competition on April 9 that eliminates nearly half of the competition.
The Blinn Treasures dance team finished on top of the eight teams that made it to the finals with a score of 9.268, with 10 being the maximum score. Ramapo College (N.J.) finished second and McLennan Community College finished third in dance.
The Blinn cheerleaders beat all seven teams that made it to the finals with a score of 93.18 out of a possible 100 points. Faulkner State finished second and Valdosta finished third in the competition.
Both teams hard a target on them returning as champions from a year ago and coaches knew that it would have to come up with more difficult routines to stay on stop of the mountain.
"There is added pressure for both groups because everyone is gunning for us," said Sarah Flisowski, cheer and dance coach. "We had to do cleaner runs on more difficult routines to stay on top."
Flisowski, who is over the Treasures and Michael Brewster over the cheer team knew the pressure won on them as coaches to improve the difficulty of the routines for the repeat championships.
"We had great sophomore leaders and we just have a great Blinn spirit family," Flisowski said.
Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 30 NJCAA national championships since 1987. For more information, visit: www.buccaneersports.com.
