Dave Aoyagi enters his second season on the Blinn College football coaching staff as the redshirt program coordinator and defensive backs coach. Aoyagi came to Blinn after spending one season as the defensive backs quality control coach at Oregon State University.
Prior to Oregon State University, Aoyagi totaled 14 seasons as a high school football coach with nine seasons spent as an offensive coordinator and five as a defensive coordinator.
Before joining Oregon State University, he spent four seasons as defensive coordinator for the Marcos De Niza High School (Tempe, Ariz.) football team. The Padres made the playoffs in each of his four seasons and played in the state championship game in 2015. Aoyagi also served as the head coach for the boys’ track and field team, where he coached state champions in the 400-meter relay, 110-meter hurdles, javelin, and decathlon. In addition, he taught weight training.
Aoyagi spent five seasons as a coach at Apache Junction (Ariz.) High School, where he spent one season as the head coach and also served as both the offensive and defensive coordinator. He also coached track and field and taught weight training.
Aoyagi had coaching stints at Kealakehe High School in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, as head track and field coach and football offensive coordinator. While there, the football team won the first Big Island Championship in school history. He also served as a football and baseball coach in Utah.
Aoyagi had stints at Phoenix College as a passing game coordinator and Southern Utah University (SUU) as a quarterbacks coach and as a running backs coach. While at SUU, the Thunderbirds led the nation in rushing yards per game.
Aoyagi was captain of the Weber State University rugby team and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in physical education.
