Buccaneers top Region XIV South leader Angelina, 94-81
BRENHAM, Texas – It may have been his first game in two years, but Blinn College freshman Macari Brooks didn't look at all rusty.
The former high school All-American scored 22 points in his first game for the Blinn Buccaneers Wednesday, helping to lead Blinn to a 94-81 victory over Angelina College at the Blinn P.E. Building.
Angelina entered the game as the leaders of the Region XIV Conference South Zone.
"Rusty? He had an alley oop dunk against the zone, then got another steal and threw it down," said Blinn (11-10, 3-7) coach Scott Schumacher. "All of a sudden, now we have some depth and we're able to rest guys."
Blinn scored 16 of the game's first 17 points and took a 49-39 lead into halftime.
Brooks, a former DePaul University signee, scored his 22 points in roughly as many minutes off the bench. After playing the season with as few as four available guards, the Buccaneers played 10 guys. They have now won three of their last four contests.
"We just kept attacking their zone and hit some buckets," Schumacher said. "Our guys came out and played with a lot of energy and enthusiasm."
Thaddeus Fortune led Angelina with 26 points, including 22 in the first half. The loss dropped the Roadrunners to 14-7 on the season and 7-3 in conference play.
"On the whiteboard before the game, I wrote, 'We have 10 games left. It's time to go,'" Schumacher said. "Now we have nine games left and we'll see what happens. Everybody's ahead of us, but I like our team and I like our guys."
The Buccaneers are on the road Saturday for a 4 p.m. tip-off against Lamar State College-Port Arthur.
