Seahawks top Buccaneers in overtime, 84-79
BRENHAM, Texas – A defensive stand in the final seconds of regulation allowed the Blinn Buccaneers to send Wednesday night's contest against Lamar State – Port Arthur into overtime.
But the Seahawks wouldn't be denied in the extra period. Lamar State defeated Blinn 84-79 in overtime at the Blinn P.E. Building behind 28 points from Ty Allen and 12 blocks from Anthony Allen.
Guard Donald Moore led the Buccaneers with 19 points, including a 3-pointer with 4.4 seconds remaining in regulation that sent the game into overtime.
With 13 seconds remaining in regulation, Lamar State made a pair of free throws to take a three-point lead. But the Buccaneers quickly got the ball down the court and into the hands of Moore, who buried the game-tying shot.
Lamar State had time to set up a potential game-winning shot, but the Buccaneer defense prevailed to send the game into overtime, 70-70. But once there, the game swung in the Seahawks' favor.
"I felt like we played well," Blinn (11-17, 3-14 in Region XIV) coach Scott Schumacher said. "We competed at a very high level. We just didn't shoot the ball well in overtime."
In addition to Ty Allen's 28 points, the Seahawks got 17 from Kieran Woods.
The win improved Lamar State to 18-7 on the season and 9-6 in the Region XIV Conference.
The Buccaneers travel to Pasadena Saturday for a 4 p.m. tip-off against San Jacinto.
