Blinn softball splits conference-opening twin bill

HOUSTON, Texas – The Blinn College softball team dropped its Region XIV Conference opener to San Jacinto 7-1 but bounced back to win the nightcap 8-1 here Wednesday night.

Blinn's only run in the opening game came on a fourth-inning sacrifice fly by Kristina Davila. San Jacinto hit a pair of home runs off freshman pitcher Shannon O'Connor (7-6), who scattered eight hits and a walk.

But the Buccaneers bounced back in the second game, sparked in part by the return of freshman first baseman Sydney Wellmann, a Brenham High School grad who had missed the last month after she was struck in the face by the ball.

Wellmann's two-run double in the fourth inning got the Buccaneers on the scoreboard, and in the fifth Blinn exploded for four runs as Peyton Webb hit a two-run single, Shelbe Sterling added a run-scoring sacrifice fly and Tara Bowers hit a pinch-hit RBI single.

In the sixth, Tiffani McKnight hit an RBI triple Davila added a run-scoring single.

The Buccaneers improved to 15-12 on the season and are now 1-1 in conference play. They travel to Port Arthur on Friday for a 1 p.m. double-header.
