Blinn College point guard Aarika Reyna will play at Southern Arkansas University next season after helping to lead the Buccaneers to their first trip to the NJCAA National Championships in 24 years.
Reyna, a redshirt sophomore from Cy-Fair High School, spent one year at Blinn after transferring from Southeastern Louisiana University. She averaged 7.3 points per game and was the team's most potent 3-point shooter with 53 buckets from beyond the arc in 35 games. She also distributed a team-high 3.5 assists per game on her way to all-Region XIV Conference honorable mention.
"She always seemed to make plays in close games," Blinn head coach Jeff Jenkins said. "In the close ones, she would come up with big steals and big baskets."
With Reyna guiding an offense that averaged 76.9 points per game, the Buccaneers' 32-4 record shattered the team's previous single-season wins record of 26, and Blinn's national tournament victories over Kaskaskia, Ill. and Darton, Ga. marked the first national tournament wins in program history. The season marked the second national tournament appearance in team history and its first since 1989.
"Aarika got the ball down the floor in a hurry," Jenkins said. "I'm just very fortunate we had her because we had so many freshmen this year. We were very lucky to get a transfer of her caliber."
Reyna also made three state tournament appearances at Cy-Fair, taking home the championship twice.
Southern Arkansas, an NCAA Division II program, competes in the Great American Conference.
