Buccaneers meet their goals in sweep of Coastal Bend

BRENHAM, Texas – The 12th-ranked Blinn Buccaneers set some pretty lofty goals for their match against Coastal Bend College Friday night at the Blinn P.E. Building.

They met every one of them.

Blinn swept Coastal Bend 25-9, 25-11, 25-10 behind 10 kills and no errors from freshman outside hitter Tyanna Roy and 18 assists from freshman setter Crystal Young.

The Bucs came into the match looking to commit no more than six errors each set. They finished with 18, including just five hitting errors on the night.

"That's an area where we've improved and that's good," Blinn (18-5, 7-2) coach Erin Mellinger said. "We've been focusing on that portion of the game and it's getting better."

The Bucs were also looking to record two blocks in each set. They finished with six on the night.

"It wasn't about focusing on the other side," Mellinger said. "We had team goals to meet and we met them."

Freshman middle blocker Emily Salter was second on the team with six kills, while Cassidy Melcher and Hope Cucancic each had four. Celeste Ramirez dished out nine assists while freshman libero Cara Fisher led the defense with nine kids while Tori Estrada added eight.

The match marked Blinn's first home contest in more than a month. The Bucs will host Laredo Community College at 1 p.m. Saturday before Wharton County Junior College comes to town at 6 p.m. Tuesday for Dig Pink Night benefitting cancer research.
